On today’s On Writing we talk about waiting for galleys in the production process of getting grydscaen: dissonance published.
So I just turned the manuscript in on Wednesday of last week to the publisher. The manuscript is evaluated and then if accepted endorsed to production. During the production phase the Microsoft Word document which is the manuscript is turned into a galley. Also the cover art is finalized and put into the cover template. The design of the grydscaen books follow a similar template so there is a common look and feel across the series. All my instructions are provided to the artist who does the galleys so that they follow my instructions to the letter.
The galley conversion process takes about two weeks. For this book dissonance we will probably get the galley while I am away in India so I will not be able to see it until I get back. That is a little bit of a bummer but I have to travel for business so it will just put a delay in getting this book through production.
The galley is the formatted book. Since dissonance will only be available in ebook, it will be an electronic galley only which is sized for ebook readers. I usually have my books in print as well but for this book I wanted to make a change since it is not part of the main series. There will be a cover galley and an interior galley.
Once I get the galleys I painstakingly go through them to find any typos and grammar issues. I have already done this three times before I submit but sometimes you don’t see things until it gets into the pdf galley version.
There is one round of corrections that usually turns into two rounds for me.
I like to see the book in the galley version because that is what it is going to look like to a reader. And it is always exciting to see the cover put together. And once the corrections are made, the book moves onto the approval stage.
The galley is the final formatted book with the page breaks and chapter headings. This book includes short stories so there will be different chapter headings in the book to correspond to the stories. This book will be laid out like grydscaen: tribute which is another short story anthology.
The galley process is dynamic because it includes corrections and you are half way into the publication process. I am waiting anxiously for the galley for dissonance and I hope it comes before I go to India so that I can have something on the plane that I can review.
Keeping my fingers crossed. Can’t wait to see the galleys. Will post a cover reveal when we get there.
