So I have been getting reviews in for grydscaen: insurrection and the readers seem to have a few things that are being called out over and over again. The thing that they are asking for is they want to see this story as a manga or an anime. Now, there is a manga for the A Storm’s Coming story that is also getting a 5 episode anime but that was a short story. Getting an entire episode of the insurrection book an anime would be an expensive endeavor and to create a manga for the story would require me as the illustrator to draw mecha in both frame mode and aircraft mode which I don’t think I am actually capable of completing.
Now in the past I have done all the illustration for manga coming out from Natsuya Uesugi. I do have a mecha design for the Quadrion Isshin mecha that I drew. There are two views one for aircraft mode and one for the mecha in full robot mode. I doubt that I would be able to execute that and all the 7 main characters that are in the book.
I have wanted to do a manga of the Sati Ima’s short story from grydscaen: beginnings which is the chapter of him in flight school but that is a short story and not a full book. Sati Ima is the main character in grydscaen: insurrection. He is a pilot on the battleship Escalon and has a history of bucking authority.
Now doing a manga is not totally out of the picture. It would be a huge endeavor to accomplish. Once I actually successfully completed a manga I would like to look into it getting animated but would need to handle the financing for that which might be exhorbitant.
I have tried to draw mecha before and did so only with a mediocre result as I know my limitations. However, if I was to be able to do a successful concept sketch then maybe this might be possible.
So, I am not going to shut down the possibility of a manga for grydscaen: insurrection at the moment but there will be some long consideration and the project would take many months to complete and would require storyboards, character designs and a script adaptation of the full length novel. There would also need to be aerial combat scenes described for aircraft and mecha and I would need to draw the Dionysis Air Fortress hovering in the sky. Now I have cover art for some of the characters in the series and this could be used to flush out character designs for the 7 characters that the readers mention.
More analysis is necessary. I would love to have a manga of this book. I agree that writing aerial combat scenes without the help of visuals asks the reader to use their imagination strongly to picture in the action. Again, not ruling it out but could I even pull it off with my illustration skills. I am currently working on the second manga in the graphic noiz series which is 96 pages and I have 20 pages left to draw but that is a contemporary story and not a military story with aircraft and battleships. More to come as I deliberate the conundrum more. Hopefully there will be a good decision in the future or maybe even a collaboration with another artist.
