graphic noiz 2 Book Summary:
Noiz is a 19 year old illustrator and mangaka straight out of art school who created his own manga, Disaster Code. Scouted at ComicCon where he was showing his art by Keita Shimura, agent to bestselling author Shiro Ijima creator of the scifi Fissure series, Noiz won the contract to be the artist of the Fissure manga. With work started on the manga, Noiz finds himself being pursued by Shiro but not only for his art. Shiro seems to be flirting but Noiz can’t seem to pin down the writer’s motives. Is he just trying to ensure the art gets done or is there some other game being played? Shiro toys with Noiz’ emotions giving him signals but then pulling back. After Shiro reveals something about his past work as the writer and artist for the manga Dawn, Noiz learns that there is a dark secret behind Shiro’s constant womanizing. Can Noiz keep Shiro engaged so he too can reveal that he has feelings for the writer? Or will Shiro’s older sister force him into an arranged marriage with one of the women he has been dating? Find out more in the second volume of the yaoi series, graphic noiz.
Writing yaoi and boy’s love stories
So, I am a big fan of yaoi in manga and anime. I think that once I found out that I was gay and started dating my boyfriend in college that the whole idea of yaoi which I was familiar with really became a thing for me. There were not many gay roll models that I had at the time since I went to college young at 16 and I really wanted to experience what it was like to be in a relationship. Since all I knew about dating was from anime since I did not date in high school, I had musings in my head how a relationship was supposed to be. Though I have only been in a few relationships some good and some bad, I wanted to write about something that young adults could relate to. There is no sex in graphic noiz, more like Shiro the writer teasing the mangaka Noiz. My relationship with my boyfriend in college was mostly a friendship until it got into something more. I had only dated one other person before I met my boyfriend.
Since I wanted graphic noiz to not really be a relationship story, there is more teasing going on than anything else. The writer is hot for the artist but he is also a womanizer who dates his female fans. Now the writer would not call himself bisexual in the story but he likes what he likes. I did not want to label him making it more about his presentation to others and his reputation than him being one thing or another.
Because I did not want to write about sex, I have the artist and the writer kiss a few times in book 1 and book 2. They are not in a relationship although they are dancing around each other. And neither one of them declares their love for the other. There is lust and longing and a little bit of confusion as the writer pursues the artist and they play a cat and mouse game but again I have written many blog posts about me never writing a romance book. I don’t consider this story to be romance in the least. Just two people with a desire that may act on it every now and then.
The Family Dynamic in graphic noiz
Shiro, the writer in the story is Japanese. He has a younger transgender sister Jade who does drag shows and wears kimono and an older sister Julia who is married to a goth musician and she is a painter and really rich. A review of graphic noiz 1 stated that the family dynamic for Shiro was fascinating and very interesting. This is a central pillar to the story how Shiro interacts with his siblings. In book 2, Julia is trying to get Shiro to settle down and stop womanizing. This becomes apparent when she suggests an arranged marriage for him. Shiro is appalled. In book 1 we saw some of the family dynamic when his father visited from Japan and Shiro was arrogant and not happy to have to play family at a dinner setting.
The interaction between Shiro and Julia gets more heated in book 2 and we see some of the comedic nature of the whole thing with Jade. I wanted family to be central to the story and Shiro’s rejection of it is key to his personality.
Making Manga
Because graphic noiz is a novella series and will be a manga I wanted to start in again on the Making Manga blog post series which I had started a while back. I am currently just finished with all the illustrations for chapter 2 of the graphic noiz manga. I want to follow my process from start to finish on the 50 page manga story. Taking place between book 1 and book 2, the manga elaborates on some of the drama in the novellas.
I want to follow the entire process from creation of the art to adding dialogue to toning/shading and publishing the work. This will be my second manga and I want to be able to tell people the entire process.
More graphic noiz is coming
For the next few weeks we will focus on the manga and get that all created with the illustrations. Since I am writing dialogue, creating character sketches, storyboarding and doing all the manga creation myself, I want to do my best to provide a compelling story. Work on graphic noiz: book 3 will start once the manga is completed. I have been procrastinating for the past two weeks on starting on the manga again but I really outdid myself today by drawing 5 pages in a few hours.
Chapter 3 artwork will commence tomorrow for the manga. I hope you will stick around to learn more about my manga creation process and follow the progress in the Making Manga blog series.
Enjoy the cover reveal and I hope you stick around as we continue the graphic noiz series.
Lets make some manga and have fun!
